18M1A8243 manb Utu the witch doctor, holds a voodoo doll made for protecting a household, he is teaching a class on making a voodoo doll and a mojo bag during a session at Sanctum Folklorica on Purchase Street in downtown New Bedford. In October I photographed the Witches' Ball and I was told that Utu the Witchdoctor was going to be in town in December. My response was simple. Let me know! Anyone who has ever walked around downtown New Bedford has seen Sanctum Folklorica on Purchase Street, but most have probably never been inside. Let me just say this. You are going to be hard pressed to find someone as nice as the owner, Jody. As a photographer, I'm always interested in things that challenge us visually, and a witchdoctor hanging out inside Sanctum Folklorica talking about voodoo dolls and mojo bags, is a no brainer. Aimee Chiavaroli decided to join me to write a story, and before long we were inside the inner sanctum 'pun intended' to hang out with Utu. During my time in Haiti I witnessed the harmonious drumming and voodoo chants in the middle of the night, so I was real curious to document Utu's stop in New Bedford. Photographically I am always trying to fill the frame with relevant information that brings the viewer into a space they might not normally find themselves in. In this photo, the senses are somewhat over run by the color, the statues and ultimately by the voodoo doll Utu is holding. The hands at the bottom of the frame, slowly take you upwards until you ultimately end at the blue light shinning on the ceiling above. I will say, that I had a great time with Utu. A knowledgeable man, who might just break the stereotypes associated with voodoo. [ PETER PEREIRA/THE STANDARD-TIMES/SCMG ]

128M1A0726 manb Lucky the Whaling City Witch is seen at the second Annual Whaling City Witches' Ball held at the Tryworks Auditorium of the First Unitarian Church building in downtown New Bedford. PHOTOGRAPHER NOTE: There are many events which have become icons in they city's sense of community. We all remember Joe Jesus and his 50's night, which I still think was one of downtowns best events. We miss you Joe... Last year I found out about a 'Witches' Ball', of course I was going! This year I was looking forward to documenting what I predict will become one of the city's most attended events in the future. The challenge in photographing events like this, is that they are purposfully dark! Photography translates in Greek to 'drawing with light' and where there is no light, there is no drawing! ahhaha. Luckily, if you understand what your camera's capabilities are, and how you can harness it's hidden power, then anything is possible! I never use a flash, for many reasons, and the primary being that I don't want the attention to be on me! High ISO's and wide apertures, let the modern DSLR capture what was impossible not all that long ago. In this case our Whaling City Witch is opening the ceremony with some smoke. Bathed in blue light from the rafters above, the photo really speaks on so many levels. The more you look, the more you will see! PHOTO PETER PEREIRA

142M1A1174 manb Helen who is filling in at the Sacred Heart Bookstore at Our Lady's Chapel in downtown New Bedford, waits for customers to arrive as the chapel prepares to celebrate Corpus Christi with a procession on Sunday at 2pm. NOTE: Discovery is what I base most of my work on. Everyday I love to walk around one of the SouthCoast's many interesting places, hoping to find something I might miss if I were driving. I was walking downtown when I noticed streamers hanging from the side of Our Lady's Chapel. I walked in an a woman inside the bookstore was speaking to a woman and a small child. After they left I hung out for a little while longer and took this photo. There are many interesting things happening in the photo from the placement of her arms, to the frame she finds herself in, to the balance created by the figures on the top section of the frame. Everything works to tell you a little bit more about the subject in the photo. PHOTOGRAPHER NOTE: When the Buttonwood Park Zoo reached out to me to tell me that local artist Chuck Hauck was installing his creations all over the place, I was on it! It's always great so see institutions like the zoo branch out, out of their normal realm, and showcase art work! Mr. Hauck's creations are just fantastic. Designed to move with the wind, they were a perfect fit for the "Summer Winds" theme. Photographically it's a waiting game. He puts one up, you photograph, He puts two up, you take the photo. He puts 6 up and you are still taking the photos, but you start to see a pattern. It was only a matter of time where two pieces were in close enough proximity to fill in the frame. PHOTORAPHER NOTE: Never hurts to walk into the Whaling Museum to see what is new inside. In this case a Dutch painting exhibit. Ill tell you this much, the curators at the Whaling Museum put on world class shows, and for a guy with a camera, that equals great photos waiting to happen. I was in this particular exhibit for about 20 minutes when I noticed a visitor really going through every single piece hanging on the wall, and taking the time to read the cards describing the piece. I noticed the model of an old Dutch whaleship in the foreground and just waited until he moved into one of the paintings between the masts. Notice how you can see all of the paintings in the background between the masts of the model? Yes, I thought of that as I positioned myself behind the model. Every centimeter counts! The building sold for $178, 200. PHOTORAPHER NOTE: The smell of fresh bread is something those of us who were around when the Sunbeam Bread plant was in full operation, will never forget. Fifteen years after it officially closed (which of course I covered the last day...) the north end structure was coming under the auction hammer. I decided to place myself just in front of the auctioneer, in a low position so that the building could be more identifiable with the name running across the top, and somewhat more graphic in the state of disrepair it has fallen under. It was only a matter of time before the winning bid was put in, and the trick was to get the moment. There it was. [ PETER PEREIRA/THE STANDARD-TIMES/SCMG ]

156M1A9414 manb Bill Gilbert of Vareika Construction, applies a new coat of varnish to the frame of the newly installed front doors to New Bedford City Hall. PHOTORAPHER NOTE: I do love to walk around to see what is happening. There is no greater way to discover, than to invest the time to walk around with no particular end goal. As they say, the journey is the destination. In this case I ran into a gentleman applying some varnish to the frames of the new doors installed at New Bedford City Hall. I have photographed these doors countless times over the years and to see City Hall being 'upgraded' was refreshing. The symmetry of the photo is what makes it work. From the bottom your eye slowly moves upward to the beautiful lintel above the mans head. The grandeur of this historic building is highlighted by the way the photo is pointed upward. Then if you look long enough you will see the blue ceiling in the vestibule just beyond. Did I mention there is a man staining the doors? Exactly. A good photo is not just one element, but everything in it is what makes it work. . [ PETER PEREIRA/THE STANDARD-TIMES/SCMG ]

PHOTOGRAPHER NOTE: Mattapoisett harbor is simply fantastic during summer time with all of the sailboats tied to their moorings. But what goes in, must eventually come out, and I had a feeling that boaters were getting anxious to get their sailboats out of the water as high winds began sweeping across the region. When I arrived, I noticed this gentleman sitting on top of the weird contraption they use to take the boats out. I proceeded to climb up, and then it was just a matter of waiting for the perfect moment. In this case notice how the man on the sailboat is busy with the line, while the driver has his hand on the gear as the apparatus moves forward. Did I mention that I was hanging off the front of the vehicle? The stuff we do to get a good photo... [ PETER PEREIRA/THE STANDARD-TIMES/SCMG ]
