Ten Japanese government officials stopped at the gravesite of Capt. William Whitfield's at the Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven to offer their respects during their tour of the Manjiro trail.  Capt. William Whitfield, a whaling captain, was responsible for bringing the first Japanese person to the United States in 1841 when he rescued Manjiro Nakahama a 14 year old boy who was marooned on a remote Pacific Island.
