Steve Fluegel, flood control manager, who is responsible for closing the two 440-ton doors that seal off New Bedford harbor in stormy conditions looks down at the behemoths he is responsible for. The New Bedford Hurricane Barrier which was finished in 1966 by the Army Corps of Engineers is a stone and steel barrier that extends for 9,100 feet (3.5 miles) and rises twenty feet above median sea level featuring two massive storm gates at its 150-foot channel. It has the distinction of being the largest stone structure on the East Coast of the United States.
