Miquelina Pereira weeps as she holds her sister Alzira Pereira's hand during the final moments of her life at a nursing home in New Bedford.

Alzira Pereira was my grandmother.  She was a caring woman, selfless and generous to the end.  I wish I could tell you stories of who she was.  All of the times my mother was mad at me for something or other, yet my grandmother failed to find any fault in her grandson.  We all have stories to tell.  When I turned to photojournalism I wanted to tell stories with my camera.  Taking a photograph like this is a painful experience I can barely describe, but not any more/less painful than photos I have taken of people I know nothing about.  The project Ive been doing since the war in Iraq/Afghanistan begun, Casualties of War, invoke the same pain deep in my heart, but are stories I feel  people need to see.

Its easy to look at a photo and forget the hardships, turmoil inflicted in the person who took the photo. I work everyday to bring decisive moments in peoples lives with my photos.  Today I bring you a chapter in the book of my life.  A painful moment.  There is nothing more certain in life than one day it will come to an end.  We live our lives taking for granted the very things that make life worth living.  Hug someone you love.  I love you grandma.
