Jacob Benoit, 16, salutes the flag that was brought in by Mike Fastoso from Dartmouth who is seen standing with his hat over his heart watching his flag being retired. Mr. Fastoso had the flag in his basement for several years waiting for a ceremony to retire it properly.Boy Scouts with troop 24 and troop of the Cachalot district retire American flags at the Pine Grove Cemetery in the north end of New Bedford. The procedure involves the scouts cutting each flag into even rectangles then placing the stacked pieces of the flag onto a fire with the star field facing upward. While the flag burns the scouts stand at attention and salute it until its completely consumed by the flames.
